When a roof starts letting water in, or a storm has lifted tiles or damaged a chimney, it cannot wait for a convenient week. We run a 24 hour emergency callout across Surrey and South London for exactly this, for homes and commercial buildings, outside our normal opening hours as well as during them.
Ring us and tell us what is happening and roughly where you are. We will tell you straight away whether it needs someone out now or can safely wait for a normal appointment.
What counts as a roofing emergency
- Water coming through a ceiling or running down an inside wall.
- Tiles, slates or ridge tiles blown off or slipped in high wind.
- A damaged or leaning chimney stack, or loose pots or masonry.
- Flashing torn away where the roof meets a chimney or a wall.
- A flat roof that has split, blistered open or lifted.
- Damage from a fallen tree or branch.
If nothing is letting water in and nothing is at risk of falling, it can usually wait, and we will say so honestly when you call.
What to do while you wait for us
- Keep everyone away from anything that could fall, and do not go up on the roof yourself. Our post on the risks of DIY roof repairs explains why.
- Put buckets or containers under drips and move furniture and belongings out of the way.
- If water is coming through near a light fitting or socket, switch the electricity off at the consumer unit and leave it off until it has been checked.
- Take photographs of the damage inside and, from the ground, outside. Your insurer is likely to ask for them.
Making it safe first, then repairing it properly
In an emergency the first job is to stop the water getting in. That usually means a temporary repair, such as sheeting over the damaged area or refixing loose tiles, so the house is protected straight away. The permanent repair follows once we can see the full extent of the damage and the weather allows, and on a bigger job it may need scaffolding first. We will explain which is which, so you know exactly what was done on the day and what still needs doing.
The permanent work is the same as any of our roof repairs, whether that is replacing slipped tiles, renewing lead work and flashing or repairing a chimney.
Storm damage and home insurance
Many home insurance policies cover sudden storm damage but not gradual wear and tear, so it is worth reading your policy and contacting your insurer early. Our post on whether roof repairs are covered by home insurance explains the difference, and how bad weather damages a roof over time covers the slower damage storms leave behind.
